About Us

The Great Guana Cay Foundation is a non-profit consortium of representatives from research institutions, conservation organizations and development interests.

The Foundation will manage the island's heritage preserve and special conservation areas - including mangrove systems, wetlands, beaches and shoreline buffer zones.

An important role of the Foundation is to facilitate a dialogue between developers and scientists on ways to promote environmental sustainability, particularly on small islands.

As part of this dialogue the Foundation will maintain a dynamic information system on Great Guana Cay's ecology and physical environment before, during and after development of the Baker's Bay community.

This web site presents information on the Baker's Bay Environmental Impact Assessment and the Environmental Management Programme.

The management programme monitors compliance with guidelines drawn from the impact assessment. The EIA was conducted during 2004 by independent researchers led by a top marine scientist.

The EIA was submitted to, and approved by the Bahamas Environmental Science and Technology (BEST) Commission.
